Frequently asked questions
What is an MLM checker?
An MLM checker is a free tool that tells you whether a multi-level marketing company is a licensed direct seller in Malaysia, has a documented enforcement record, or is unverified and possibly a pyramid scheme. You type the company name and get a verdict grounded in KPDN's public licensing records and clear red-flag signals.
How do I check if an MLM company is legit in Malaysia?
Type the company name into the checker above, or verify directly on KPDN's Status of Direct Selling Companies page. A legitimate MLM holds a valid AJL direct selling licence and earns income from selling real products. No valid licence, or income mostly from recruitment fees, means you should be cautious.
Is MLM legal in Malaysia?
Yes, multi-level marketing is legal as direct selling, provided the company holds a valid AJL licence from KPDN. Operating without that licence is unlawful, and pyramid or chain-distribution schemes are a criminal offence under Section 27B of the Direct Sales and Anti-Pyramid Scheme Act 1993.
What's the difference between an MLM and a pyramid scheme?
A legitimate MLM earns money by selling real, tangible products and is licensed by KPDN. An illegal pyramid scheme earns mainly from recruitment: members pay to join, and income flows from new sign-ups rather than product sales. If joining costs money and the focus is recruiting rather than selling, treat it as a pyramid scheme.
How do I report an MLM scam or pyramid scheme?
Report to KPDN through the e-Aduan portal at e-aduan.kpdn.gov.my, or call the toll-free hotline 1-800-886-800. You can also contact the National Consumer Complaints Centre or your nearest KPDN state office. For monetary losses over RM10,000, lodge a police report as well.
Does a licensed MLM mean it's halal?
Not automatically. A valid AJL licence covers legality, not Shariah compliance. Under JAKIM's guidelines, an MLM is permissible only when it meets conditions like real products, commission from genuine sales, and no riba, gharar, or maysir. A licensed company can still fall short, so check the two separately.
